「オートポイエーシス:生命と社会の自己維持ダイナミクス」

"Autopoiesis: The Self-Sustaining Dynamics of Life and Society"

Autopoiesis is a concept based on self-generation and self-maintenance, introduced in the 1970s by Chilean biologists Humberto Maturana and Francisco Varela. It describes the process by which living systems generate their own components and maintain themselves through interactions with their environment. Key features include self-generation, where organisms produce their own elements like cells, and self-maintenance, where they sustain their structure and function through environmental interactions. These systems are closed, functioning independently while being influenced by external factors. Autopoiesis is applied in various fields, such as biology, to understand the essence and evolution of life; systems theory, to analyze self-maintenance mechanisms in social systems and organizations; and cognitive science, to model psychological processes and consciousness. In social systems, autopoiesis offers an intriguing perspective, suggesting that societies continuously generate their components, such as rules, culture, and values, allowing them to evolve and adapt over time. Societies maintain themselves and their stability through subsystems like media, education, and law, preserving their fundamental structure despite external influences. They also exhibit both closed and open characteristics, exchanging information and resources with the external environment while maintaining their identity and order. This concept is useful in organizational theory to understand how organizations reproduce themselves and adapt to environmental changes, in social change to analyze how movements and policies impact and transform existing social systems, and in communication to explore the role of information flow in maintaining and changing systems. Autopoiesis provides a powerful theoretical framework for understanding how social systems sustain and evolve.
