Greece has passed a new law that will stop children under 15 from using social media. The law will take effect on January 1, 2027. It covers popular services such as Instagram, Facebook, and TikTok. Social media companies, rather than parents, will be responsible for keeping younger children off their platforms. (hellenicparliament.gr)

Under the law, platforms must use reliable methods to check a user’s age. Greece plans to use government services such as Gov.gr Wallet and Kids Wallet. These services can tell a platform whether a person is over or under 15 without sharing the person’s exact age or other private details. Companies that do not follow the rules may face serious penalties. (moh.gov.gr)

The Greek government says the ban is necessary because social media can harm children’s health and safety. Spending too much time online may cause poor sleep, trouble concentrating, and social isolation. Young users may also experience cyberbullying or see inappropriate content. Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis has described the measure as difficult but necessary. (moh.gov.gr)

However, not everyone supports the law. Opposition parties did not vote for it, and some critics worry about privacy and freedom of expression. Others question whether age checks will really work, since young people may try to find ways around them.

The new rule will bring a major change to the daily lives of Greek families. Supporters hope children will sleep better, spend more time outdoors, and meet friends face to face. Still, the debate raises an important question for every country: How can society protect children online without taking away too much freedom?
