Today, let’s talk about NASA’s Psyche spacecraft. It launched on October 13, 2023. It is flying to an asteroid also named Psyche. That asteroid is in the main asteroid belt, between Mars and Jupiter. (nasa.gov)
On May 15, 2026, the spacecraft flew very close to Mars. It passed about 2,864 miles, or 4,609 kilometers, above the planet’s surface. NASA used Mars like a slingshot. The planet’s gravity gave the spacecraft about a 1,000-mile-per-hour boost and changed its path without using onboard fuel. (nasa.gov)
The Mars flyby was not only about speed. Psyche also took pictures of Mars. Before the closest pass, Mars looked like a thin crescent. After the flyby, the spacecraft captured a nearly full view of Mars and a clear look at the south polar cap. (nasa.gov)
Now Psyche is heading on to asteroid Psyche. NASA says the spacecraft is on course to arrive in summer 2029. The asteroid should capture the spacecraft in late July 2029, and science work is planned to begin in August 2029. Scientists want to learn what this strange world really is. It may be the partial metal core of an early small planet, or it may be a mix of rock and metal. Either way, this is NASA’s first mission to explore an asteroid with a surface that contains substantial amounts of metal. That is why a quick trip past Mars is such a big step on the way to a very unusual world. (nasa.gov)
