Imagine opening your laptop for a job interview, but no human interviewer appears. Instead, a program shows questions, and you record your answers. Later, an AI system may study your words or speech patterns and give information or a score to the employer. This kind of AI interview is becoming part of modern hiring. (hirevue.com)

AI can also write interview questions, screen résumés, contact applicants, and arrange meetings. In a 2025 LinkedIn survey, 73% of recruiting professionals said AI would change how companies hire. Among those already testing or using generative AI, workers reported saving about 20% of their working time. This may allow recruiters to spend more time speaking with strong candidates. (linkedin.com)

For companies, AI can make hiring faster and more efficient. It can ask every applicant the same questions, which may make interviews more consistent. For job seekers, recorded interviews are convenient because they can often be completed at home. However, speaking to a machine may feel uncomfortable or lonely.

There are also serious risks. An AI system learns from data, and that data may include unfair patterns from past hiring. It may also misunderstand people with disabilities or unusual speech patterns. As a result, a qualified person could receive a low score for a reason that is not connected to the job. (calcivilrights.ca.gov)

Governments are responding. New York City requires certain automated hiring tools to receive an independent “bias audit,” or fairness check. California regulations that took effect on October 1, 2025, make clear that automated systems must not discriminate against applicants. In the European Union, AI used for recruitment is considered “high risk” and must follow strict rules, including human oversight. (home4.nyc.gov)

AI interviews will probably continue to grow, but human judgment will remain important. The best future may not be AI replacing recruiters. Instead, AI may handle routine work while people make careful, responsible, and fair final decisions.
