Artificial intelligence can now write emails, summarize reports, and suggest answers in seconds. Because of this, knowing how to use AI is becoming important at work. However, employers are also paying more attention to a very human skill: the ability to think.
The World Economic Forum’s 2025 report found that analytical thinking was the most important core skill for employers. About 69% of the companies surveyed considered it essential. Analytical thinking means studying information carefully, finding connections, and solving problems step by step. (weforum.org)
More recent research shows the same trend. In a 2026 U.S. survey by ZipRecruiter, 65% of employers said critical thinking had become more important in hiring than it was one year earlier. Microsoft’s 2026 research also found that workers saw checking AI output and critical thinking as especially important human skills. Most workers said that they treated an AI answer as a starting point, not a final answer. (ziprecruiter-research.org)
Why does thinking matter so much? AI can produce a clear and confident answer, but the answer may be incorrect or unsuitable. A good employee must ask useful questions: Is this information correct? What facts are missing? Does this solution meet the customer’s needs? What could happen if we follow this advice?
Hiring methods are changing as well. Companies are becoming more interested in what people can actually do, not only in their education or job history. This is called skills-based hiring. Interviews may therefore include practical tasks, problem-solving exercises, or questions about how a candidate made a decision. (linkedin.com)
Job seekers should practice explaining their thinking clearly. When answering an interview question, describe the problem, the information you used, the choices you considered, and the reason for your final decision. In the AI age, getting an answer quickly is useful. Understanding and judging that answer is even more valuable.
