Can earphones speak for you?

I am in a small shop. A man says words. I do not know them. My earphones hear him. Then I hear English.

I say, “Water, please.” He hears his language. We smile.

But wait. Earphones can be wrong. Speak slowly.

Earphones help, but a smile helps too.
