Imagine a workout that feels almost too easy. This is the idea behind “Zone 0 training,” a recent name for very light physical activity. It includes slow walking, gentle stretching, easy cycling, gardening, and simple housework. Your heart rate stays close to its resting level, and you can breathe comfortably and speak in full sentences.
Zone 0 is not an official medical training zone, so there is no exact heart-rate number for it. It is easier than Zone 2 exercise, which is often used to improve aerobic fitness. After Zone 0 activity, you should feel fresh rather than tired.
Why can such easy movement be useful? Many people spend several hours sitting at a desk, in a car, or on a sofa. The World Health Organization says that replacing sitting time with physical activity of any intensity, including light activity, can provide health benefits. (who.int)
Recent research also supports taking short activity breaks. A 2026 review of 53 studies found that regular breaks from sitting helped control blood sugar and insulin after meals. Short walking breaks showed particularly good results. (pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov) This does not mean that Zone 0 can cure illness, but it suggests that gentle movement is better than sitting continuously.
Zone 0 is easy to add to daily life. You could walk slowly for ten minutes after dinner, stretch while watching television, or move around your office every 30 minutes. Because it requires little energy, it may also be suitable on a recovery day or when you are returning to exercise.
However, Zone 0 should not replace all other exercise. Adults are still advised to do 150 to 300 minutes of moderate aerobic activity each week, together with muscle-strengthening exercise. (who.int) Think of Zone 0 as an extra layer of movement. You do not always need to run fast or train hard. Sometimes, simply getting up and moving slowly is a valuable first step.
