Far beyond Neptune, space is dark, cold, and hard to study. Yet scientists recently found a small icy world there. They call it Ammonite.
The Subaru Telescope first saw it in recent sky pictures. Researchers then found it in much older pictures too. These pictures helped them understand its orbit. An orbit is the path around the sun. (subarutelescope.org)
Ammonite travels on a very long, unusual path. It also stays far from the large planets. Computer studies suggest its path stayed stable for billions of years. Because of this, scientists call it a “fossil.” Here, fossil means something that keeps very old information. (subarutelescope.org)
For example, imagine finding an old diary in a cold room. The diary can tell you about life long ago. In the same way, Ammonite may describe our early solar system. Its strange path may show that space changed greatly long ago.
This tiny world does not shine by itself. Still, it can help answer very big questions.
