Have you ever gone out to clean up trash and found something amazing instead?
Last week, a team of divers in the Strait of Sicily was lifting old fishing nets from a shipwreck when one diver saw a huge shape moving through the blue water. It was an adult great white shark. The divers believe this is the first underwater footage of an adult great white shark in the Mediterranean Sea, filmed by divers in its natural habitat. The video was released on June 8, 2026. The dive was led by Healthy Seas with Ghost Diving and SDSS. The work happened between Sicily and Tunisia, in a part of the central Mediterranean known for rich sea life but also heavy fishing. In the video, the shark swims with striped pilot fish beside it. The underwater photos and video were taken by volunteer diver Derk Remmers. (internazionale.it)
Imagine you are cleaning a park near your home, and suddenly a wild tiger walks quietly past the trees. That is a little like this moment. One diver said the shark may have come near because dead sea animals were trapped in the abandoned net. Even after seeing the shark, the team went back to work. They removed ghost nets, the lost fishing nets that can trap turtles, big fish, and other animals. (internazionale.it)
And here is the deeper part of the story. Great white sharks do live in the Mediterranean, but they are very rare there, and scientists still know little about how many are left or how they move. Researchers say the Mediterranean population is critically endangered, and fishing pressure has pushed it to very low levels. (frontiersin.org)
So this is not only a shark story. It is also a story about care. When people remove danger from the sea, the sea may show them a secret. And sometimes, that secret reminds us what is still worth saving.
