In July 2026, astronomers announced an exciting discovery: they had found clear evidence of an atmosphere around LHS 1140 b. This rocky planet is about 48 light-years from Earth. LHS 1140 b is not exactly like Earth. Its radius is about 1.7 times larger, and its mass is 5.6 times greater. It travels around a small, cool red dwarf star once every 24.7 days. The research team used the Magellan Clay telescope in Chile. When the planet passed in front of its star in September 2024, some of the star’s light traveled through the planet’s atmosphere. By studying this light, the scientists detected helium escaping into space. This showed that LHS 1140 b has kept an atmosphere for billions of years. However, the helium was not detected during another observation in 2025. The amount of escaping gas may change because of activity from the star. (cfa.harvard.edu)
An atmosphere is important because it can control a planet’s climate, protect its surface from dangerous radiation, and help keep water from escaping. Still, this discovery does not prove that water or life exists on LHS 1140 b. Scientists must study the lower atmosphere and search for other gases.
