Every spring, many people go to Washington, D.C. to see the cherry blossoms. The reason is not only the beautiful flowers but also the history behind them.
In 1912, Japan gave about 3,000 cherry trees to America as a gift. This gift was a symbol of friendship between the two countries. Now, the cherry trees around the Tidal Basin are a famous spring sight in D.C.
The 2026 National Cherry Blossom Festival is from March 20 to April 12. The best time to see the flowers is expected to be from March 29 to April 1. The flowers are beautiful, but the best time is very short. Many people come because they think, "It is now or never!"
People come not only for the flowers but also for the friendship between America and Japan. The festival celebrates this long and special friendship.
There are many fun events at the festival too. Here are some of them:
- Opening Ceremony
- Kite Festival on March 28
- "Petalpalooza" music and fireworks event on April 4
- Parade on April 11
In 2024, about 1.6 million visitors came to the festival. They spent about 202 million dollars in D.C.
This festival is a special spring experience. You can enjoy cherry blossoms, history, international friendship, and fun events all at once. It is a celebration for everyone.
