The inside of a banana peel has tiny structures called "vesicles," which contain a liquid called mucin. This mucin changes into a gel-like substance when it absorbs water, creating a very smooth surface. When someone steps on the peel, the vesicles break, and the mucin is released, providing a lubricating effect on the ground. As a result, the friction coefficient, which measures slipperiness, becomes 0.066, the same level as skis sliding on snow. The humorous image of slipping on a banana peel became popular from Charlie Chaplin's movie in 1915. However, here is an unexpected fact: it has been discovered that melon and watermelon peels are actually much more slippery than banana peels.
