“Japanese walking” is a simple walking style from Japan. Its real name is Interval Walking Training, or IWT. You walk fast for three minutes, then walk slowly for three minutes, and repeat. The method was developed at Shinshu University in Japan. The usual plan is about 30 minutes at a time, on four or more days each week. It started in Japan, but now people in many countries are talking about it. (shinshu-u.ac.jp)
Why do people like it? First, it is easy to understand. Second, it does not need a gym or expensive equipment. You only need a safe place to walk and something to check the time. During the fast part, you should feel that walking is hard and talking is not easy. During the slow part, you let your body relax a little before the next fast part. If three fast minutes are too hard at first, beginners can start with one or two minutes and slowly build up. (brownhealth.org)
The science is one big reason this style is popular. A 2007 study in Mayo Clinic Proceedings found that middle-aged and older adults who did interval walking improved fitness, leg strength, and blood pressure more than people who did steady walking. A later Shinshu University report on 679 adults also found better fitness and better signs of lifestyle-related disease after five months. A 2024 review said this training can work well for many people, especially older adults, and can improve fitness, muscle strength, and blood sugar control. (cir.nii.ac.jp)
The method is spreading fast now because of social media. PureGym’s 2025/26 Fitness Report said “Japanese walking” was the fastest-growing fitness trend for 2026, with interest up 2,968%, and said it had already gone viral on TikTok. News coverage in the UK also described it as a viral TikTok exercise trend. So this is not just a Japanese idea anymore. It is becoming a world walking trend. If you have heart disease or other health problems, it is best to ask a doctor before you try it. (puregym.com)
