What Is March Madness?
March Madness is a term for the NCAA Division I basketball championship for men and women. It is one of the biggest tournament events in American sports. Every year, 68 teams are chosen to play. The format is single-elimination — this means if you lose one game, you are out immediately. This creates a lot of tension and excitement.
The Schedule for 2026
Selection Sunday will be on March 15, 2026. On this day, a committee will choose the 68 teams and announce the bracket for the tournament.
- The men's bracket will be announced at 6 p.m. (Eastern Time) on CBS.
- The women's bracket will be announced at 8 p.m. on ESPN.
Here is the men's schedule:
- March 17–18: First Four games
- April 4: Final Four
- April 6: Final game in Indianapolis
Here is the women's schedule:
- March 18–19: First Four games

Understanding the Bracket and Seeds
The bracket is a chart that shows all the matches in the tournament. A seed is a team's rank — it shows how strong the committee thinks each team is.
The 68 teams are put into four regional groups. In each region, teams get a seed from 1 to 16. Number 1 is the strongest. First, the First Four happens — four teams play and four teams are out. Then, the main tournament starts with 64 teams.
What Is an Upset?
An upset is when a weaker team beats a stronger team. For example, a number 13 seed beating a number 4 seed is a big upset. This has happened many times in March Madness history. Because of single-elimination, any team can win on any day. This combination of skill and surprise gives the tournament an amazing atmosphere.
Useful Basketball Words
Here are some words you will hear during games:
Fast break — This is a quick attack. After a team gets the ball, they run forward before the other team's defense is ready. It is very exciting to watch.
Free throw — This is a shot with no defense. It is worth one point. A player gets a free throw when the other team makes a foul.
"And one!" — This is when a player makes a shot AND gets a foul. The player gets one additional free throw. Fans love this moment.
Over and back — This is a violation. When a team moves the ball past the middle line, they cannot bring it back to their own side.
Paint — This is the area under the basket.
Glass — This means the backboard. When you hear "off the glass," it means the ball hit the backboard before going in.
How Teams Advance
After the first round, the tournament gets smaller and smaller. Here is a simple explanation:
- Sweet 16: The last 16 teams (regional semifinal)
- Elite Eight: The last 8 teams (regional final)
- Final Four: The last 4 teams
- Championship game: The last 2 teams play for the title
Each division — men's and women's — follows this same path.
Enjoy Watching!
You do not need to understand every English word to enjoy March Madness. If you know seed and upset, you can follow the story of each game. If you hear fast break or "and one," you can feel the excitement of the play. Try looking at the bracket before the tournament starts. Ask yourself: "What seed is this team?" "Will there be an upset?" This will make watching much more fun!
