Online shopping may be entering a new stage. Instead of typing keywords and opening many product pages, people can now tell an AI agent what they want in natural language. The agent can ask follow-up questions, compare products, and in some systems even place the order and manage delivery. Alibaba made one of the biggest moves in this area in May 2026. The company fully connected its Qwen app to Taobao and Tmall, giving the AI access to more than 4 billion products. Users in China can now browse, compare, place orders, and manage deliveries through conversation. Alibaba says the system also has tools for logistics and after-sales service. This followed an earlier January 2026 upgrade that let Qwen order food, make in-chat payments, and book travel inside Alibaba’s ecosystem. Alibaba has also said Qwen passed 300 million monthly active users by February 2026, and during the Chinese New Year period the app helped with nearly 200 million orders for shopping, travel, and entertainment. Alibaba is not alone. Google says its AI Mode shopping experience can help users narrow down products and even use an agentic checkout feature with Google Pay when the price is right, with user guidance and oversight. Google is also expanding the Universal Commerce Protocol, a standard meant to help AI agents work with merchants across shopping, hotel booking, and food delivery. OpenAI has launched Shopping Research in ChatGPT, which asks clarifying questions, checks up-to-date information such as prices and reviews, and creates a buyer’s guide. For shoppers, the idea is simple: less searching, less comparing, and less stress. But trust is still the big question. That is why companies keep talking about transparency, reliable sources, and human control. The AI may do the heavy work, but people still want to decide what to buy and when to pay.
