It was a rainy Friday night. Kenta, 26, was waiting in front of her apartment as usual. It was the time when his girlfriend, Mai, would come back from work. "It's our date night," Kenta murmured happily. He took out his smartphone and opened the chat with Mai.
Kenta: "I'm looking forward to tonight!♪"
Mai: "Me too♡"
Kenta gazed at the screen with a blissful expression. Although their direct conversations had decreased recently, he believed it was because Mai was busy with work. Still, their chat continued, which Kenta saw as proof of their bond.
Suddenly, the entrance to the apartment opened. Mai had returned. Kenta, holding a bouquet, moved to approach her. However, there was an unfamiliar man behind her. Kenta was momentarily bewildered but quickly reassured himself, "He must be a colleague or something."
"Mai! Welcome back!" Kenta called out cheerfully. But Mai's reaction was entirely unexpected. She hid behind the man with a look of terror on her face.
"Who... who are you? How do you know my name?" Mai's voice was trembling.
Kenta was confused. "Huh? Mai, it's me, Kenta. Isn't tonight our date night?"
The man stepped forward, blocking Kenta. "Are you Kenta Sato? I'm with the police. We've been waiting here on suspicion of stalking."
Kenta's mind went blank. What was happening?
The man continued, "You broke up with Mai Tanaka three months ago. Since then, you've been stalking her, creating fake social media accounts to communicate with her."
The bouquet fell from Kenta's hand. Was it all an illusion? A fabricated relationship he had created himself. The joyful chats with Mai had been nothing but a one-man show.
"But... but we..." Kenta was at a loss for words.
Mai, her voice still trembling, said, "I clearly broke up with you three months ago. Why... why did you..."
Reality shattered Kenta. He finally comprehended the gravity of his actions, Mai's fear, and the enormity of what he had lost.
As he was handcuffed, Kenta whispered to Mai, "I'm really... sorry."
As the police car drove away, the rain had stopped. Mai sighed in deep relief. For her, a long, dark nightmare had finally ended. For Kenta, it was the beginning of a long journey to come to terms with reality and face the music for his actions.
