The sea floor may look quiet, but it can change fast. Deep under the ocean, Earth’s plates pull apart. A plate is a huge piece of Earth’s hard outer shell. When plates open, hot rock rises up. In the Indian Ocean, tools were already waiting on the sea floor. They recorded earthquakes, ground movement, and heat. Then the bottom split open. The valley floor dropped about four meters. The two sides moved apart by more than one meter. Lava poured out for about sixteen days. (nature.com)
