Have you ever asked Google a full question, almost like talking to a person? Then here is a new twist. The answer may help you shop, and the ad may feel like part of the talk.
Google’s AI Mode is a chat-like kind of Search. You can ask one question, then ask more, and still get links to the web. On May 20, 2026, Google said it was testing new ad styles in AI Mode with Gemini. Google says these ads will still be clearly marked “Sponsored,” but they are made to match the real question a person asks. (blog.google)
Now picture Emi. She wants an espresso machine, but not just any one. She wants one that is small, quiet, and easy to clean. So she asks Google in natural English. In Google’s new plan, AI Mode can answer her question, and then show a shopping ad with a short AI reason about why one product may fit her needs. Google also says that when AI Mode makes a list of ideas, a sponsored answer may appear right inside that list. (blog.google)
So here is the change. A Google ad is not only a short sales line anymore. In these tests, it can answer, explain, and join the flow of the search. This builds on AI Overviews, where Google already shows some text and shopping ads, and Google has also said ads are coming to AI Mode. (support.google.com)
Of course, it is still an ad. But the shape is changing. Search is becoming more like a conversation, and buying is becoming more like asking for advice. Next time you ask Google a real question, listen closely. The answer may be helping you and selling to you at the same time. (blog.google)
