The Daruma Sun is a type of solar mirage phenomenon where the sun appears distorted into a "Daruma" shape, especially during sunrise or sunset near the horizon. This phenomenon occurs mainly from the autumnal equinox to the vernal equinox due to the temperature difference between the sea surface and the atmosphere. Specifically, water vapor from the sea refracts light, making the sun look like a Daruma doll. The Daruma Sun is often observed in winter evenings, particularly in places like Sukumo Bay and Muroto City. It happens when warm water vapor and cold air create a boundary that reflects light, and it can be seen about 20 times during winter, but only around 10 times in a perfect Daruma shape. Recommended spots for viewing include Sukumo Bay, especially the Mozu area, Sukumo New Port, and Kanyoto Park, as well as Muroto City, where you can see the Daruma sunrise to the east and the Daruma sunset to the west. This natural spectacle is best observed by arriving at the location 30 minutes before sunset. The best season to see the Daruma sunset is from mid-November to mid-February, with the phenomenon occurring around 5:00 PM from November to January and around 5:30 PM in February. Clear weather and a significant temperature difference between the air and sea are ideal conditions for this occurrence. Although it is a rare event and perfect conditions are necessary, visiting during this period offers the highest chance of witnessing this breathtaking phenomenon.
