In only about three years, ChatGPT has grown from a new AI chatbot into one of the world’s biggest apps. Reuters reported on June 2, 2026, that the ChatGPT app passed 1 billion global monthly active users in May 2026, based on estimates from Sensor Tower. Reuters also said it was the fastest app ever to reach that level, moving faster than well-known apps such as TikTok, Instagram, YouTube, and Google Maps. ChatGPT launched in late 2022, so this rise has been remarkably quick. (investing.com)
OpenAI’s own updates also show how wide this growth has become. On February 27, 2026, the company said more than 900 million people use ChatGPT each week to improve daily life, including learning new skills and dealing with complex tasks. In a later research update, OpenAI said that during the first quarter of 2026, ChatGPT growth spread across age groups, and users over 35 increased their share of total messages. (openai.com)
This story is especially interesting for Japanese learners. In OpenAI’s Q1 2026 research, Japan was one of the fastest-rising countries in ChatGPT messages per person, moving from 43rd place to 35th. OpenAI also said workplace use is changing. People still often use ChatGPT to create writing and images, but fast-growing tasks now include content creation, health-related documentation, and finding information. That means the tool is not only popular for fun. It is becoming part of study, work, and everyday problem-solving. (openai.com)
Still, the AI race is not over. Reuters said Anthropic’s Claude had about 56 million global monthly active app users as of the second quarter of 2026 to date, and its yearly growth rate was far faster than ChatGPT’s. Sensor Tower also found that some U.S. users who installed Claude spent 5% less time on ChatGPT one month later. Even so, ChatGPT’s jump to 1 billion monthly app users shows how quickly AI chat has entered normal life. For English learners, that may be the biggest lesson: AI is no longer a tool only for tech experts. It is becoming a common partner for learning and communication. (investing.com)
