In Japanese mythology, the birth of Amaterasu is a significant creation myth. Izanagi, in an attempt to revive his wife Izanami, ventured into the underworld but broke his promise by looking at her, which angered Izanami. Consequently, Izanagi fled back to the living world. To purify himself from the impurities of the underworld, he performed a purification ritual at the river mouth of Tachibana in Tsukushi. During this ritual, many deities were born. Among them were the three noble children: Amaterasu, who was born when Izanagi washed his left eye; Tsukuyomi, born from washing his right eye; and Susanoo, born from washing his nose. These deities were given specific realms to govern: Amaterasu was bestowed with the celestial realm of Takamagahara, Tsukuyomi was given the night, and Susanoo was assigned the sea. This myth not only explains the origins of major Japanese deities but also symbolizes the establishment of natural order. Amaterasu, as the sun goddess, plays a significant role and is deeply connected with the origin myth of the Japanese imperial lineage.
