Google has announced a new kind of AI glasses. At Google I/O on May 19, 2026, the company introduced “intelligent eyewear” built on Android XR. Google said the first product will be audio glasses, and they are planned to launch later in fall 2026. The company also showed display glasses, which can place helpful information in the lens, but the audio model will come first. (blog.google)
These glasses are made to work with Gemini, Google’s AI assistant. You can say “Hey Google” or tap the side of the frame to ask for help. Google says the glasses can answer questions about what you see, give turn-by-turn directions, send texts, summarize missed messages, take photos and videos, and translate speech and writing in real time. They can also work with phone apps such as Uber and pair with both Android and iOS phones. (blog.google)
One fun point is the design. Google is working with Samsung and eyewear brands Gentle Monster and Warby Parker, and it showed two early frame styles at the event. Google says these designs will be part of the brands’ larger collections later in 2026. This is important because smart glasses will only become popular if people actually want to wear them all day. For English learners, the translation feature may be the most exciting. Google has already shown that the glasses can translate a conversation live, which could feel like getting subtitles for the real world. Imagine traveling in another country, looking at a menu or a street sign, and hearing the meaning right away. Google is still testing prototypes with trusted users and says it will share more details in the coming months, so this fall’s launch will be interesting to watch. (blog.google)
