In London’s Kensington Gardens, the 2026 Serpentine Pavilion has a simple but memorable name: a serpentine. It was designed by LANZA atelier, a Mexico City studio founded by Isabel Abascal and Alessandro Arienzo. The pavilion opened at Serpentine South on June 6, 2026, and it is free to visit until October 25, 2026. This year is special because it is the 25th edition of the famous Serpentine Pavilion program. The most interesting idea is its wall. The design is based on a “serpentine” or “crinkle-crankle” wall, a wavy brick wall used in English architecture. Because the wall curves, it can stay strong while using fewer bricks than a straight wall. In this pavilion, the shape also gives a quiet nod to the nearby Serpentine Lake and to the image of a snake moving through a garden. (serpentinegalleries.org)

The building is open and light, not heavy. A second curved wall follows the trees around the site, and a translucent roof rests on brick columns like a small group of trees. Light and air can pass through the space, so visitors feel both inside and outside at the same time. LANZA atelier also used brick to connect the new pavilion with English garden tradition and with the brick front of Serpentine South, which was once a tea pavilion. The studio even designed the chairs and stools for the space. (serpentinegalleries.org)

The pavilion is more than a building to look at. Throughout the summer, it will host talks, tours, family days, and other public events. Serpentine also says this is only the second time Mexican architects have been chosen for the commission since Frida Escobedo in 2018. For learners of English, this pavilion shares a clear and useful idea: smart design does not always mean using more. Sometimes, a gentle curve can make a place stronger, calmer, and more inviting.
