Many people worry that artificial intelligence will take their jobs. Some companies have reduced staff or stopped hiring for tasks that AI can complete. However, the latest research shows a more complex picture: businesses that use AI successfully may actually need more workers.

PwC’s 2026 study examined more than one billion job advertisements in 27 countries and territories. It found that companies in industries most affected by AI increased their headcount by 52% from 2018 levels. For companies least affected by AI, the increase was 36%. Why would AI lead to more hiring? When AI makes employees more productive, a company can serve more customers, develop new products, or enter new markets.
