On June 1, 2026, researchers reported in Nature that a smartphone may be able to measure your heart rate just by watching your face while you use the phone normally. The system is called passive heart-rate monitoring, or PHRM. The researchers also found that the smartphone’s resting-heart-rate estimates matched well-known health patterns: higher body mass index was linked with higher resting heart rate, and better fitness was linked with lower resting heart rate. Why does this matter? Resting heart rate is an important sign of cardiovascular health, but tracking it over many days usually needs a wearable device. Because many people already use smartphones many times a day, this research suggests that phones could one day help more people check their health without extra devices. The system still has limits. It does not work well in every moment, especially with heavy motion, very short phone use, or poor lighting.
