When you see the recycling sign, you know an item may be recycled. Soon, you may also see a new sign for reuse. On June 3, 2026, PR3, a global group for reuse standards, introduced a new worldwide mark for reusable packaging. It is for things like cups, bottles, and food boxes that are made to be used again and again. PR3 says the design was chosen after entries from 29 countries and testing with 1,275 people in 17 countries. (pr3standards.org)

This new mark is not the same as a recycling mark. Its job is simple: it tells people, “Don’t throw this away. Return it.” PR3 says the mark should be used only for a real reuse system. That means there must be places to return the container, ways to move it, and places to sort and wash it before it is used again. So, the mark is not only about the container itself. Will this help reusable containers spread? There are good signs. In the European Union, the new Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation entered into force on February 11, 2025, and most rules start on August 12, 2026. The EU says the law is meant to reduce packaging waste and support reuse. It also says reusable packaging sold from February 12, 2029, or later in some cases, must have a label telling users that it is reusable. (environment.ec.europa.eu)

Real projects are growing too. In Copenhagen and Frederiksberg, a return system for reusable takeaway packaging has more than 54 return stations as of spring 2026. This makes reuse easier for busy people. So, the new mark alone will not change everything. But a clear sign can help.
