Can Apple still catch up in AI? At WWDC26 on June 8, 2026, Apple made its clearest attempt yet. It introduced Siri AI, a rebuilt version of Siri powered by Apple Intelligence. Apple says the new assistant is more conversational, can look across messages, email, photos, and other apps for relevant information, use what is on the screen to answer questions, search the web for up-to-date information, and continue chats in a separate Siri app that syncs across devices. Siri AI is also tied more closely to Writing Tools and Visual Intelligence, showing that Apple wants AI to feel like part of the whole Apple experience, not just a single chatbot. (images.apple.com)

This matters because Apple has looked slow in the AI race. Reuters noted before the conference that Siri first appeared in 2011, while many users had already moved to tools like ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini for smarter answers and more useful task help. At WWDC26, Apple’s response was bigger than Siri alone. Its updated Foundation Models framework now lets developers use Apple’s own models, Private Cloud Compute, and outside models such as Claude and Gemini through a shared protocol. That suggests Apple is no longer relying on one assistant to save it; instead, it is trying to spread AI across its entire software ecosystem. (investing.com)

Still, this comeback is not guaranteed. Apple says Siri AI will enter beta later in 2026, and support starts only on newer hardware, including iPhone 16 models and the iPhone 15 Pro line. Apple also says iPhone and iPad users in the EU will not get Siri AI at launch because of Digital Markets Act issues, and Siri AI will not be available in China at first either. Even more importantly, Apple’s developer documentation still says some major Siri capabilities, such as personal context, onscreen understanding, and in-app actions, are still scheduled for a future software update. Reuters also reported that Morgan Stanley estimates more than 1.3 billion iPhones cannot run advanced Siri features. So WWDC26 did not feel like the end of Apple’s AI struggle. It felt like its boldest second chance. (images.apple.com)
