JWST Just Read the Rocks of an Alien World 49 Light-Years Away

With the James Webb Space Telescope, exoplanet science has taken a decisive step from meteorology to geology. In a study published on May 4, 2026, researchers used JWST’s Mid-Infrared Instrument to obtain a 5–12 micrometre thermal-emission spectrum of LHS 3844 b, a rocky “super-Earth” orbiting a red dwarf about 48.5–49 light-years away. The planet is roughly 1.29 times Earth’s radius, about 2.37 times Earth’s mass, and whips around its star in only about 11 hours, so close in that it is almost certainly tidally locked. Earlier observations had already shown that it lacks a thick atmosphere; now JWST has gone further and begun to reveal the nature of the surface itself. (nature.com)

What makes this result so compelling is that the team did not “see” mountains or craters in any photographic sense. Instead, they read the planet’s heat spectrum the way a geologist reads a rock sample. Different minerals emit infrared radiation in subtly different ways, and the observed spectrum is best matched by a dark, low-silica surface: basalt, lava rock, or other olivine-rich mantle-like material. By contrast, a silica-rich crust more like Earth’s continental crust is strongly disfavoured. The observations also rule out a surface dominated by fresh, bright, powdery grains, unless those grains have been darkened by long exposure to radiation and impacts. (nature.com)

The emerging picture is bleak, but fascinating: a dark, hot, airless world with a dayside temperature around 1,000 K, perhaps resembling an oversized Mercury. JWST also found no convincing signs of volcanic gases such as carbon dioxide or sulfur dioxide at the levels the study could detect, which makes recent widespread volcanism less likely. That, in turn, suggests a planet whose surface may have been altered less by active tectonics than by relentless space weathering. For language learners, LHS 3844 b offers a powerful reminder that modern astronomy is no longer limited to discovering distant worlds; it is beginning to read their histories, mineral by mineral, from almost fifty light-years away.
