Texas is famous for oil, but it is also becoming a big solar state. By the first quarter of 2025, Texas had more than 43 gigawatts of installed solar power, ranking second in the United States. Solar panels can work for more than 25 years, so many of today’s panels will stay in use for a long time. Still, people are already thinking about the future: what should we do when old panels finally come down? (seia.org)

One answer started to grow in Odessa, Texas. SOLARCYCLE opened its first solar panel recycling facility there in 2022. The idea is simple but important: do not throw old panels away if their materials can be used again. According to the U.S. Department of Energy, more than 85% of a typical solar module is made from materials like glass and aluminum that we already know how to recycle. SOLARCYCLE says its process can recover about 95% of a panel’s value, including glass, aluminum, copper, silver, and silicon. (solarcycle.us)

This Texas project is not just a small local story anymore. In May 2025, RWE Clean Energy chose SOLARCYCLE to recycle panels from many of its solar projects, after testing panels from its West of the Pecos site in Texas at the Odessa plant. The company also found another smart use for older panels: in 2024, it built a 500-kilowatt solar system from more than 1,000 reused panels to provide about half of the electricity for the Odessa recycling factory. Old panels, in a way, are helping recycle old panels. (solarcycle.us)

Texas is also changing its rules. A 2025 state law says that new lease agreements for solar power facilities must include plans for reusing, recycling, or properly disposing of parts such as photovoltaic modules, and the law took effect on September 1, 2025. That means recycling is becoming part of the solar business from the start, not just at the end. For English learners, this is a useful idea to remember: clean energy is not only about making power. It is also about using things wisely, again and again. (capitol.texas.gov)
