When loneliness has become a global health issue, AI companions seem almost inevitable. The World Health Organization said in June 2025 that about one in six people worldwide are affected by loneliness. At the same time, companion-style chatbots are designed to speak like a friend or confidant, which makes them especially attractive to people who want comfort without judgment. (who.int)

Recent research suggests that these systems can offer real short-term relief. A 2025 paper in the Journal of Consumer Research found that AI companions can reduce loneliness in the moment, sometimes on a level comparable to a brief human conversation and more than passive activities such as watching videos. The study also argues that one reason is simple but powerful: users often feel that the chatbot is listening to them. (academic.oup.com)

But the longer-term picture is more complicated. In a four-week randomized controlled study by MIT Media Lab and OpenAI involving nearly 1,000 participants, heavier ChatGPT use was linked to worse outcomes, including higher loneliness, greater emotional dependence, and lower social interaction. OpenAI’s own summary also said that extended daily use was associated with worse outcomes, and that people who saw the AI as a friend were more likely to report negative effects. In other words, the same tool that comforts someone today may, for some users, weaken real-world connection tomorrow. (arxiv.org)

Another important point is scale. OpenAI reported that emotionally engaged use is rare in the vast majority of ChatGPT conversations, and Anthropic reported in 2025 that only a small share of Claude conversations were “affective use,” with companionship and roleplay making up an even smaller slice. That suggests AI companionship is not replacing human relationships for most users—at least not yet. (openai.com)

There are also serious risks beyond emotion. In September 2025, the U.S. Federal Trade Commission opened an inquiry into AI chatbots acting as companions, focusing on harms to children and teens and on how companies handle conversation data. Mozilla’s privacy researchers had already warned that all 11 romantic AI chatbots they reviewed deserved a privacy warning label. (ftc.gov)

So, do AI companions fill loneliness or deepen it? The best answer may be: both. Current evidence suggests they can soothe loneliness for a while, but they are not a full substitute for friendship, family, or community. They may be a bridge in a lonely moment—but they are a risky place to build a whole emotional life. (academic.oup.com)
