In Barcelona, the Sagrada Família has reached a very important moment. On February 20, 2026, workers placed the top arm of the cross on the central Tower of Jesus Christ. With that final outside piece, the church reached its highest point: 172.5 meters. This means the exterior of the central tower is now complete. (blog.sagradafamilia.org)
This tower is the heart of the basilica’s group of central towers. It stands in the middle and is dedicated to Jesus Christ. At the top is a huge cross that is 17 meters tall and 13.5 meters wide. The cross was made in parts and assembled near the top of the church. It is covered with white ceramic and glass, following Gaudí’s idea that it should shine in the light of day and also at night. Still, the story is not over. Official reports say the outside of the tower is finished, but work inside the structure will continue in 2027 and 2028. The Sagrada Família has been under construction since 1882, and Antoni Gaudí died in 1926, so he never saw this moment himself. That is one reason this milestone feels so special. (vaticannews.va)
Another big day is coming soon. The official 2026 program says the blessing and inauguration of the Tower of Jesus Christ is planned for Wednesday, June 10, 2026, exactly 100 years after Gaudí’s death. The ceremony is set to be led by Pope Leo XIV, and the plan includes a special light show around the tower and the sky over Barcelona. After more than 140 years of work, the central tower shows how a dream can live across many generations. (sagradafamilia2026.org)
