Online shopping may be entering a new stage. For years, people searched, opened many tabs, compared prices, and then checked out. Now Google is pushing a different idea: ask an AI assistant what you want, and let the system guide you all the way to purchase. On January 11, 2026, Google announced the Universal Commerce Protocol, or UCP, an open standard for “agentic commerce,” where AI can help complete shopping tasks for users. Google says UCP was co-developed with Shopify, Etsy, Wayfair, Target, and Walmart, and supported by major payment and retail companies such as American Express, Mastercard, Stripe, Visa, and Zalando. The big change is checkout inside AI conversations. Google says UCP will power a new checkout feature for eligible U.S. retailers in AI Mode in Search and in the Gemini app. Shoppers will be able to buy products while they are still researching, using Google Pay and shipping information already saved in Google Wallet; PayPal support is also planned. Google adds that retailers remain the seller of record, so the store still owns the sale even if the purchase starts inside Google’s AI tools. (blog.google)

This move did not appear from nowhere. In May 2025, Google expanded AI Mode in the U.S. and said its Shopping Graph had more than 45 billion product listings, with more than 2 billion refreshed every hour. Later, at Google I/O 2025, the company introduced an AI shopping experience that could suggest products, track price drops, and offer a “buy for me” flow after the user confirmed the details. By January 2026, Google had moved from helping people discover products to helping them finish the purchase. (blog.google)

Google is also adding “Business Agent,” a branded chat experience on Search, so shoppers can ask questions directly to a retailer in the brand’s own voice. At the same time, Shopify says its merchants can manage product data once and show products across AI channels including ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot, Google AI Mode, and Gemini. This suggests that the future of shopping may be less about typing short keywords into a search box and more about having a conversation with AI that can actually act.
