People often say, “A dog is man’s best friend.” Now science shows that this friendship is very old. In March 2026, two studies in Nature reported the oldest DNA ever clearly identified as dog DNA. One dog lived about 15,800 years ago at Pınarbaşı in today’s Türkiye. Another lived about 14,300 years ago at Gough’s Cave in the UK. This is exciting because early dogs and wolves looked very similar. For a long time, scientists could not always tell which bones were from dogs and which were from wolves. In the new studies, researchers used improved ancient-DNA methods and checked many old canid bones from Europe and nearby regions. They found that dogs were already living across western Eurasia before farming began. In other words, dogs were helping or living with hunter-gatherers long before people kept sheep, cows, or goats. The most touching part is what the bones say about daily life. At Pınarbaşı, dog remains were found in the same area as human burials. Chemical study of the bones also suggests that these dogs ate fish, probably from the same food system as the people there.
