At Milan Design Week 2026, bathing is being presented as more than a daily habit. One of the clearest examples is The Flamingo Estate Bathhouse by Kohler, a special installation shown during Fuorisalone at the Padiglione d’Arte Contemporanea in Milan. The wider design week runs alongside Salone del Mobile, with Fuorisalone taking place from April 20 to 26, 2026, and the Kohler installation open from April 21 to 26. (fuorisalone.it)
The project was created by Kohler and Richard Christiansen, the founder of Flamingo Estate. It reimagines the bathhouse on the Flamingo Estate property in Los Angeles and turns it into a temporary wellness space in Milan. In the courtyard, visitors see a brutalist-style structure rising from wildflowers. Inside, the mood is soft and quiet: oversized stained-glass windows filter the light, and 200 Flamingo Estate candles cover the walls. At the center is a new version of Kohler’s Reverie freestanding bath, made with enameled cast iron and a copper exterior. (prnewswire.com)
What makes this installation especially interesting is that the idea of “bathing” expands beyond people. Around the garden, there are four custom cast-iron pollinator baths for birds, bees, and other insects. Kohler says these pieces were designed to support different pollinator species, and they were cast in the company’s historic foundry in Wisconsin. This means the design is not only about luxury or beauty. It is also about care, ecology, and living together with nature. (kohler.com)
For English learners, this story is a good example of modern design language. Words like ritual, sanctuary, material, and sustainability are important here. Milan Design Week 2026 shows that bath culture can be calm, beautiful, and even environmental. In this project, a bathtub is not just an object in a bathroom. It becomes the center of a larger idea about rest, craft, and our relationship with the natural world. That larger meaning is an inference from the way the installation combines the bath, the garden, and the pollinator baths. (prnewswire.com)
