When V&A East Storehouse opened on 31 May 2025 in London’s Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, it did more than add another cultural venue to the city. Designed by Diller Scofidio + Renfro with Austin-Smith:Lord inside part of the former 2012 Olympics Media and Broadcast Centre, the 16,000-square-metre project turned storage itself into architecture, spectacle, and argument. It now houses more than 250,000 objects, 350,000 books, and roughly 1,000 archives; at its center, the Weston Collections Hall leads visitors through over 100 compact displays literally inserted into the ends and sides of storage racks. What makes the building so provocative is not merely its scale, but its inversion of museum hierarchy. Rather than hiding conservation, cataloguing, and retrieval behind sealed doors, the Storehouse places the public in intimate proximity to the machinery of preservation. ArchDaily describes the plan as reversing the conventional museum layout, with the most public zone at the core and more restricted functions pushed outward; Elizabeth Diller, meanwhile, has characterized the institution as “neither warehouse nor museum,” but a hybrid shared by staff and visitors. The V&A’s free Order an Object system extends that philosophy even further, allowing anyone to book specific works for close viewing. The result is a museum that treats curiosity not as passive admiration, but as a form of access. (archdaily.com)

This is why the Storehouse matters beyond its own walls. V&A East Museum, the second half of the project, is scheduled to open on 18 April 2026 in a separate five-floor building designed by O’Donnell + Tuomey. Read together, the two venues imply a larger shift in museum architecture: away from the old model of the museum as a polished temple of selected masterpieces, and toward a distributed civic ecosystem combining exhibition, archive, study center, and public forum. That is the deeper question raised by V&A East: in the age of visible storage, is the museum’s most meaningful exhibit no longer the object alone, but the institution’s own processes of care, choice, and access?
