Amazon may be trying smartphones again. On March 20, 2026, Reuters reported that the company is developing a new phone, internally called “Transformer,” with Alexa at the center of the experience. According to the report, Amazon sees the device as a way to keep customers connected to its services throughout the day, from shopping to entertainment to smart-home control. (tech.yahoo.com)
This idea is exciting because Amazon has already failed once. Its first phone, the Fire Phone, was announced on June 18, 2014. Amazon promoted unusual features such as Dynamic Perspective and Firefly, and it tied the device closely to Amazon’s own content and shopping ecosystem. But the product never became popular. Amazon later slashed the price, and by September 2015 it had stopped selling the phone. (press.aboutamazon.com)
Still, the world is different now. In February 2025, Amazon introduced Alexa+, a new version of Alexa powered by generative AI. Amazon says Alexa+ is more conversational, more personalized, and able to do more useful tasks, such as summarizing information, helping with shopping, and making reservations. Amazon also says there are now more than 600 million Alexa devices in the world. As of April 2026, Alexa+ is available across Alexa-enabled devices, the web, and the Alexa app in the U.S.; it is free for Prime members and costs $19.99 per month for full access otherwise. So, can Amazon succeed this time? Maybe—but only if the phone feels truly helpful. A modern AI phone must do more than push users toward one company’s store. It needs strong apps, smooth daily use, and a clear reason to choose it over Apple or Android rivals. That challenge may be even harder because Amazon shut down its Appstore for Android devices on August 20, 2025, which shows how difficult the mobile ecosystem is outside Amazon’s own hardware. My view is simple: an “Alexa phone” could work if it becomes a smart personal assistant first and a shopping machine second. Otherwise, history may repeat itself. (developer.amazon.com)
