In March 2026, the American College of Sports Medicine published its first major update on resistance training since 2009. The new statement was based on 137 systematic reviews covering more than 30,000 participants, so it was not built on one trend or one celebrity workout. Its central message was refreshingly simple: for most healthy adults, the biggest step is not designing a perfect routine, but moving from doing nothing to doing something regularly. (acsm.org)

The details still matter, of course. According to the review, strength tends to improve more when people use heavier loads, train through a full range of motion, do two to three sets, and work out at least twice a week. But the same review also found that many things people obsess over—such as equipment type, exercise complexity, periodization, or always training to total muscle failure—did not consistently change the main results. That means dumbbells, machines, resistance bands, and body-weight exercises can all be effective if they fit your life and you keep doing them. (pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov)

This idea also matches Japan’s “Physical Activity and Exercise Guide 2023.” The Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare recommends muscle-strengthening exercise for adults and older people two to three days a week. Its materials explain that strength training can improve muscle strength, physical function, and bone density, and may also be linked to lower risks of disease and death. The guide adds two practical reminders: train the whole body rather than only one “favorite” part, and leave enough time for rest and recovery. (kennet.mhlw.go.jp)

So, is continuing more important than a perfect menu? For most people, yes. Elite athletes may need highly detailed plans, but ordinary adults usually need something more realistic: a routine that is safe, simple, and repeatable. In that sense, the new guideline offers good news. You do not need the ideal program on day one. You need a program that still exists in your life on day thirty, day one hundred, and beyond.
