During Milan Design Week 2026, Milan will offer more than new products and stylish displays. On Friday, April 24, the city’s design and architecture archives will open for one special evening in an event called Common Archive – La Notte Bianca del Progetto. It takes place during Milan Design Week, which is scheduled for April 21 to 26, 2026, and the archive program will run from 6:30 p.m. to 11:00 p.m. (salonemilano.it)
This is the first time these archives will open together in one city-wide program. Visitors will be able to join more than 50 guided tours and free talks across Milan. The project is organized by the Salone del Mobile.Milano Observatory with the School of Design at Politecnico di Milano, and it is supported by the Lombardy Region and the Municipality of Milan. What makes this event special is the chance to see the hidden side of design. People usually see the finished chair, lamp, or building. Here, they can discover the steps before the final work: drawings, models, photographs, notes, and other materials that show how ideas grow. The program includes important places such as the Cittadella degli Archivi, CASVA, Triennale Milano, and the Politecnico di Milano archives. It also includes studio-homes and foundations connected to famous designers and architects such as Achille Castiglioni, Franco Albini, Vico Magistretti, Gae Aulenti, and Gio Ponti. (salonemilano.it)
For English learners, this event tells a clear and exciting story: design is not only about beautiful objects. It is also about memory, research, and everyday work. For one night, Milan will feel like a city-sized classroom where the past helps people understand the future. Entry is free, but advance registration is required, so visitors need to book early.
